A Boise vet looking for a more reliable blood supply for dogs needing transfusions has started a donor program.
The Idaho Press Tribune (http://bit.ly/HeLOKu ) reports veterinarian Chad Hunt started Canine Blood Heroes at Bench Animal Hospital in January.
Under the program, owners can bring in their dogs to donate nearly a pint of blood as often as once every eight weeks. Donors are compensated with $50 for veterinary care.
Donor dogs must be:
•Healthy and Happy
•Greater than 50 lbs
•Between 1-7 yrs old
•Able to lay still for 10 minutes
•Committed for at least 2 years
So far, Hunt has eight dogs that donate blood on a regular basis. And he says they have already helped save the lives of other dogs.
