Black cats and dogs often get overlooked and left behind, animal shelters report.

Multi-colored pets stand out more in the often harsh lighting at shelters and black pets don't photograph as well. Also, their features and expressions are harder to see.

Black cats are viewed as being spooky or bad luck, and black dogs tend to be large.

Animal shelters are doing what they can to find homes for these pets. The Seattle Humane Society has started an exclusive Black Cat & Black Dog Club for adopters who choose to welcome black pets into their homes.

Adopt a black cat or dog from Seattle Humane today and you’ll receive instant membership to the Black Dog & Cat Club.

Do you already have a black cat or dog? Send us your photos! Upload them directly to our Your News pets page.
