Question: Is baby shampoo (Johnson and Johnson) OK to use to wash your dog with? I just cannot stand the shampoo that is sold in the pet stores. They smell so bad with all of the perfume that they put in them. Heck, I can't even stand the smell so I know my dog can't stand it.

Dr. Waterhouse - While most dogs would find human shampoos a bit on the harsh side, baby shampoos do not often contain the "offensive" ingredients found in their adult counterparts.  It should be fine to use as a routine shampoo for your dog.  It is important to note, however, that bathing too frequently (even with the most mild of shampoos) can dry the skin and cause problems -- so try not to bathe more than once every 2 weeks or so.

NOTE: Asking a question over the Internet is not an acceptable substitution for consulting in person with your pet’s regular veterinarian. Dr. Waterhouse cannot give drug dosing advice or prescribe medications. Emergency and urgent health concerns should be dealt with immediately by your pet’s regular veterinarian or an emergency veterinarian.
