With the new year, adoption fees for dogs and cats from the Seattle Animal Shelter have gone up.

The increase includes higher fees for spaying and neutering, vaccinations, and license fees for dogs.

The total cost for adopting a dog will now range from $202 to $237; and for a cat will range from $152 to $157. Previously, adoption packages for dogs ranged from $145 to $180, and for cats, from $102 to $107.

The shelter says the spay- and neuter-fee increases will allow the clinic to fully recover expenditures while continuing to provide assistance to low-income pet owners through a special Pet Population Control Fund.  The increase in the dog license fees will provide funds to retain two enforcement officers who provide field services.
