Seattle Men’s Chorus Celebrates Sexy Soulful Synchronicity, with a Dash of Silly, in Heartthrobs

Get ready to scream and faint with excitement as Seattle Men’s Chorus thrills fans of all generations with a musical look at America’s singing heartthrobs — the boy bands! This high-energy show pays tribute to six decades of male singing groups, from the Ink Spots to the Jonas Brothers, with a host of other swoon-worthy acts — like The Bee Gees, the Temptations, Earth, Wind & Fire, Menudo, the Backstreet Boys, and ‘N Sync—sandwiched in between.

The term “boy band” came into its own in the 1990s when groups like the Backstreet Boys, ’N Sync, and Boys II Men were topping the charts. With this concert however, artistic director Dennis Coleman chose to broaden the historical frame of reference for boy band influences to include “any popular male singing group that ever elicited high-pitched screams of delight from the balcony.”

The “Boys in Twos” medley includes treasures ranging from the Everly and Righteous Brothers up through Air Supply, Wham!, Erasure and Milli Vanilli. You’ll hear collections from “the Brit Boys,” “The Powerhouses” and “The California Boys” as well.

The ensemble Captain Smartypants will demo late ’70s tight-harmony disco magic with some original falsetto-cracking Bee Gees hits. And period costumes, iconic dance moves with an appearance by Diverse Harmony (the nation’s first gay-straight alliance youth chorus for 13-22 year olds) round out this high caliber super-fun production.
