Great ideas start with great people. The power one person has to bring others together is simply amazing. John Gruver from United Catcher Boats Association exemplifies this concept perfectly.
Six years ago he and his wife were watching KING 5 when he saw an ad for Home Team Harvest and was moved to donate. That year, as they drove to Tacoma to drop off a donation he thought, “what if I got everyone at United Catcher Boats to participate?” His fundraising goals soared from there.
Working in the fishing industry for many years, John explained that every fisherman knows what it’s like to struggle. They all have had good times and bad times. As a company and as part of the food industry, he also recognizes the importance of food.
His wife, a school teacher in the Puyallup School District, hears numerous stories of people struggling in their community. The thought of students coming to school hungry bothered them. And the fact that many people are completely unaware how often this happens was something they wanted to change.
John was more than appreciative and surprised by the reaction he got from his boating community. Representing and managing major fleets in Washington gave him access to a fairly large email list to ask for donations.
His message to the community is that many of us have neighbors who probably aren’t doing as well as we are. The dependence on food banks is high and he sees first hand people working hard to make ends meet.
John’s initial donation evolved into an unbelievable giving campaign at United Catcher Boats. Last year alone they graciously donated a $55,000 check!
We can’t wait to see how far their efforts go this year!
