There are so many words that I can use to describe my uncle Deano, but the one that truly stands out in my mind would be “HAPPY”.  Deano is the happiest guy on earth.  He is content with a pop in one hand and an arm around a friend.  He may also be described as the friendliest guy in town.  Wherever we are, Deano seams to make a pal.  Whether we’re at the grocery store, out running errands, or shopping at the mall, he’ll start up a conversation with a stranger and leave as a friend. Deano is just the type of person who can change a frown on anybody’s face to a smile.  He has the best personality and definitely the best sense of humor and he’s probably the happiest “12th Man” after Sunday’s victory.  For Halloween one year, Deano dressed up as Miss America.  He put on a brown wig and lipstick and paraded around in a women’s bathing suit.  Dean may not have been the prettiest finalist, but he certainly was the happiest and most deserved.

Deano and many others like him have found happiness and joy with the group Friendship Adventures. FA is a non-profit dedicated to enriching the lives of people with developmental disabilities. Their sole mission is to plan events and activities that all of their participants can come to (free of charge most of the time), enjoy time with their friends, build lasting relationships and participate in activities that they would not otherwise be exposed to.

I am a volunteer for FA not only because of my Uncle, but I see the joy this group brings to the faces of our participants. Our calendar of events are full of things like dances, bingo nights, movie nights, crafts, etc.; things that most of our participants aren’t able to enjoy on their own; something we take for granted on a daily basis.

We have our upcoming auction on March 29th in Lynnwood where we raise 90% of our funds for our 40+ activities in a calendar year for our over 1500 participants. We are always looking for other people who share our love for this special population; whether it’s in volunteer form, a monetary donation, auction sponsor or attendee or anyone just looking to make a new friend; get involved today.

This group greets everyone with a smile, an open heart, a high five and a big hug.  Deano is a lifetime buddy to whomever he meets and will forever have a smile on his face.  I am so grateful to have him and his buddies in my life.
