Do a Little BIG Thing to End Alzheimer’s!
By Keri Pollock, Alzheimer’s Association
It doesn’t take much to make a BIG difference.
That’s why we are asking people to Do a little BIG thing to end Alzheimer’s. By doing one little thing, you have the potential to make a BIG difference in the lives of individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s and related dementias.
Alzheimer’s is currently the 3rd leading cause of death in Washington State. There are over 150,000 Washingtonians who have Alzheimer’s or a related dementia, and more than 350,000 family members and friends who provide in excess of 368 million hours of unpaid care. There is no cure for Alzheimer’s. And without a cure, these numbers are expected to triple by 2050.
Alzheimer’s is the most expensive disease in America. By 2050, it threatens to bankrupt our healthcare system. Alzheimer's now affects more than 5 million Americans and is costing over $200 billion annually, twice what is spent on cardiovascular disease and close to triple what is spent on treating cancer, according to a recent RAND study.
So I look to the future of my daughter and her cousins, who earlier this year lost their grandfather to Alzheimer’s, and me and my siblings, who lost both our grandmothers and our dad to Alzheimer’s, and I wonder, “Are we next? Will my daughter need to care for me as we’ve had to care for our family members?” I want a different future for her. Selfishly, I want a future different than what my dad and grandmothers experienced the last years of their lives.
From a professional perspective, I want a different future for the individuals and families we serve at the Alzheimer’s Association.
Our vision is a world without Alzheimer’s. One way to make that happen is to ask you to Do a Little BIG Thing!
What are some little BIG things you can do?
Attend and be a VOICE at one of our upcoming TOWN HALLSin August. The Town Halls are your opportunity to speak up for the needs and rights of people with Alzheimer's and their families, and help persuade Congress to address those needs through legislative action. We are one of six states that does not have a state Alzheimer’s disease plan, we want to change that.
Participate in an upcoming WALK TO END ALZHEIMER’S. The Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's is the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer's care, support and research. Held annually in 10 locations in the Western and Central Washington State Chapter region, this inspiring event calls on participants of all ages and abilities to reclaim the future for millions.
LEARN THE FACTS.. Knowledge is power. When you know the facts, you’re empowered. When you know the facts, you are educated about Alzheimer’s and related dementias, its cost and burden to families, the health care system, our communities. You can raise awareness about our need for greater investment in research to find a cure, and about the programs and services we offer to support persons with dementia and their families until that cure is found.
