Hello my name is Kaitlyn Toomey. I am a junior at Arlington High School. I am a member of the Arlington Future Farmers of America. The FFA is a nationwide organization that not only promotes the future of farming but also teaches leadership skills, public speaking, and promoting agriculture throughout the student’s life. FFA promotes life skills in many areas. I was elected to be treasure for the 2012 – 2013 school year.
I became interested in FFA when my big sister was a member of FFA and took me along when she took care of the sheep for the FFA members. I learned what it takes to raise a lamb to market. I also had many animals around home thanks to my big sister and brother as he didn’t want to mow the lawn and gave two pygmy goats to us. We were able to have our goats bred. My goat had twins girls, I played with them a lot and they followed me everywhere. As they got to be about 4 months old we moved them to a pasture where the owner raised elk. My mother goat got in with the elk and she was killed, so I became there mom.
Sadly my mother and I became homeless and I had to give my goats away. Someday I would like to live somewhere I could have goats again. I am now living in a stable home thanks to many people who saw us on Making a Difference. For now FFA and school have been helping me in many ways. I am taking classes in pre vet and floral design. Pre vet classes are helping me learn about many animals and their care. I feel FFA goes along with this as well as helping me to grow in speaking in public, skills in organization, keeping accurate records and abilities to interact with many different people. The floral design class I feel will also be helpful in the future.
I am now the treasure for our chapter of FFA. October 20th to the 27th of this year is set for the National Convention of the FFA. I feel this opportunity would be beneficial in my life in so many ways. Our chapter only goes to the National every other year and as I am a junior this is my only opportunity to attend.
I need to ask for help to raise the funds quickly as my mother is on disability and there isn’t money for this. If people would help and allow me this privilege I would represent our state with poise, good conduct and professionalism. The cost of this is $1,500.00 dollars. I know the time is short with a deadline of October 15th I wasn’t aware of this until now so haven’t had time to do any fund raisers. So again if you would help I will do my very best to honor this opportunity.
Thank so very much,
Kaitlyn
