Two KING 5 News "Yellow Jackets" Win National Photographer of the Year Honors
Seattle, WA - The 28 men and women recognized by their KING 5 logoed yellow jackets make up the best team of TV photojournalists in the nation. The National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) has selected KING 5 as Large Market Station of the Year in their annual Best of Photojournalism contest. This is the second such win in three years for KING 5.
In addition, two KING 5 photographers won national recognition. Doug Burgess won his first Ernie Crisp Television News Photographer of the Year and Jeff Christian was the runner-up.
In the 11 categories judged, KING 5 won first place four times with a total of 13 wins. That compares to a total of four wins for the next two stations. The judges were unanimous in the decision to give KING 5 the award
Judge Seth Voorhee said, "Everything was solid, spectacular; the stories had the most complexity. There were a lot of different reporters and the quality didn’t drop off.” And Brian Kaufman said in his judging notes the station “didn’t have any weak stories. They even pulled characters into a spot news story.” Each story included on the award entry can be viewed on KING5.com:
- Fire Forces Rancher Out
- Bystanders Take Down Robbery Suspect
- Heavy Snow Closes Highway 101
- Star Student Remembered at Federal Way High School
- 82-Year-Old Woman Survives 75-Foot Fall
- Tourists Peeved Over Small Pike Place Market Bathrooms
- High School Student’s Dream Comes True With Help

About Burgess’ work, judge Lynn French said, "He has a signature to his stories, you could easily pick them out.” Kaufman added, "He has the ability to take really complicated stories and shoot them in a way that made them conversational." Kaufman said Christian’s work showed all-around good shooting and had the most memorable quotes.
Executive News Director for KING 5, KONG 6/16 and NWCN Mark Ginther said it took a station commitment to win this award. “Everyone from reporters, editors, engineers, producers and the assignment desk staff work together to make this happen.” said Mark Ginther, Executive News Director of KING 5, KONG 6/16, and NWCN.
