Becomes First Broadcast Meteorologist in Seattle Market to receive AMS Honor

Seattle, WA - KING 5 Chief Meteorologist Jeff Renner has earned the prestigious Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) designation from the American Meteorological Society, becoming the only local broadcaster in the Seattle market to achieve that honor. The CBM program, launched in January 2005, was established to raise the professional standard in broadcast meteorology and encourage a broader range of scientific understanding, especially with environmental issues. To earn the CBM mark of distinction and recognition, meteorologists must meet specific educational and work experience criteria and succeed in rigorous testing of knowledge, communication and related sciences. The American Meteorological Society is the nation's premier professional organization for those in the atmospheric and related sciences.

"This is a great honor for Jeff. He's the most qualified broadcast meteorologist in the Northwest and he does an outstanding job in communicating all weather related issues to viewers" said Pat Costello, Vice President and KING 5 Station Manager. "Jeff is the guy every other broadcast meteorologist is measured against. Professional recognition of that fact is very gratifying."

As Chief Meteorologist for KING 5 News and NWCN, Jeff Renner leads the largest team of broadcast meteorologists in the region, including Rich Marriott, and Don Carson. Renner provides his forecast on-air weeknights on KING 5 News at 5:00P, 6:30P, 10:00P and 11:00P. Detailed written forecasts are also available on KING5.com/Weather and via KING5.com newsletters at KING5.com/Newsletters. Renner's five-day Seattle area weather forecast is also available daily in the Seattle Times newspaper.

A graduate from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in journalism, Jeff joined KING in 1977 as the station's science reporter. In 1980 he was named weather anchor and science editor as well as the station's main reporter on the Mount St. Helens eruption. In 1988, Jeff earned a Bachelor of Science degree in atmospheric sciences from the University of Washington. Several outdoor activities keep Jeff busy year round. He's an avid skier, pilot, scuba diver, equestrian, climber and backpacker. Jeff lives in Sammamish with his wife and son.
