SEATTLE, June 12, 2013 –This month, Home Team Harvest, KING 5’s signature community event surpassed the 4 million meal mark for its 12th annual campaign! The record-setting number follows a final donation of $84,000, presented by the Safeway Foundation and made possible by Washington State customers who led “Every Bag Counts” sales nationwide in December. While the donation comes six months later, the achievement reaffirms Home Team Harvest as the largest food drive in Washington State and comes at a time when inventory at local food banks is typically at a lull.
“The Safeway Foundation wanted to show our appreciation to our customers by helping their gifts keep giving during a time of most need during the year,” says Sara Osborne, Public and Government Affairs Director of Safeway. “We are thrilled to know that Northwest Harvest can use this gift to purchase and distribute healthy food that is not easily collected during food drives, such as fresh produce and proteins.”
The partnership between KING 5 and Northwest Harvest started in 2001, benefitting from the support of U.S. Bank for more than a decade. In 2012, KING 5 welcomed Safeway as sponsor of Home Team Harvest and the phenomenal success of the campaign continued to grow.
