Next Wednesday won’t be an average school day for the region’s students. Oct. 16 is the first-ever DiscoverU day, an unique opportunity to build excitement around college and career across Seattle and South King County. As part of DiscoverU day, students of all ages – kindergartners to high school seniors – will think about their interests and reflect on their futures. This effort includes nearly 150,000 students in 275 schools. Participating districts include Auburn School District, Federal Way Public Schools, Highline Public Schools, Kent School District, Renton School District, Seattle Public Schools and Tukwila School District.
This is what DiscoverU will look like in schools:
- All school staff will wear college gear
- Educators will share their education or career pathways
- Students will participate in activities that explore their college/career interests
Local community organizations, such as the Boys and Girls Club of Rainier Vista, are also participating in DiscoverU and carrying this important message into after-school programming.
DiscoverU is being supported by the region’s school districts and community organizations because research shows students who think and plan for their futures do better in school. DiscoverU is designed to help all students think about how education can help them achieve their dreams.
Community members and parents are invited to participate in DiscoverU by attending community conversations at five regional Starbucks stores. These free meetings will focus on postsecondary education and what it means to families and community. Please join us!
