Congratulations to the Auction of Washington Wine on another successful year!
In a season of highs and lows (temperatures, anyway) the 23rd annual Auction of Washington Wines will stand out as a highlight of my summer.
It culminated last weekend with a Gala and Auction that raised more than one million dollars for Seattle Children's Hospital.
KING 5 Consumer Reporter, Jesse Jones served as emcee under the tent at Chateau Ste. Michelle, but the real star of the show was Jake Finkbonner, a 10 year old from Ferndale, WA who nearly lost his life in 2006 after becoming infected with a flesh-eating bacteria.
Jake is doing incredibly well today and he credits his doctors at Children's for making that possible.  With his family surrounding him, Jake was able to thank the doctors and the donors directly.  It was a powerful moment that silenced the crowd and reminded everyone of the important cause that brought them together.

In 2009, Children's provided $96.4 million dollars worth of uncompensated care to kids like Jake.  So much that it's difficult to quantify the number of children, their family members and friends who benefit from events like the Auction of Washington Wines and the generous people who attend and donate.

Thank you to everyone who attended, to the Washington winemakers for their generosity and inspiration and to the chefs for their masterful creations.  This is an event KING 5 is proud to help sponsor and we hope to see you all back under the tent next year.

How they raised $1.4 million:

  • The Barrel Auction and Picnic with the Winemakers raised $61,000.
  • Nearly 500 wine lovers attended 13 winemaker dinners on Friday evening around the greater Seattle area, raising $40,000 for the Auction’s charities.
  • In its second year, Revelry on Red Mountain, at Col Solare winery near Benton City raised an impressive $16,000.
  • And the Covey Run 5K and 10K Run/Walk raised $135,000 – $20,000 over last year’s earnings.

Top auction items:

  • Raise your Paddle for Seattle Children’s Hospital - nearly $400,000
  • DeLille Cellars 192 Bottle Vertical Collection  - $19,000
  • Columbia Crest #1 Wine in 2009 lot - $14,000

About the Washington Wine Education Foundation
The Washington Wine Education Foundation aims to strengthen the quality and reputation of the Washington Wine industry by providing support toward a world-class enology and viticulture research, education and training program specific to Washington State. A portion of funds raised during the Auction of Washington Wines goes toward scientific research in vineyards and fermentation, Washington-based educational programs that promote undergraduate and graduate degrees, and to farm worker and industry employee programs that promote health and safety. This educational group began collaborating in 2001 to create quality educational programs in winemaking and grape growing.
