Fry's shoppers offered chance to cut in line - for a price

The store manager said anyone found engaging in the practice of letting people pay to cut in line would be terminated.

RENTON, Wash. - Fry's Electronics is known for ads touting low prices, but nowhere on its day-after-Thanksgiving sale advertisement did it mention a special offer some people found questionable.

On Friday morning, as hundreds were lined up inside the store to pay, some shoppers say employees approached them in line with a chance to avoid the wait - for a price with tax included.

"(They said) if you have $108.79 you can get to the front of the line," said shopper Carolyn Rice. "And I said is this a joke? Is it for real? And he said it's for real."

One shopper even got an offer to cut in line for $200.

Rice said she told the employees no way.

"I said so are you getting paid the money and they said no, Fry's is getting paid the money," she said.

When KING 5 asked about this at the customer service desk, one employee said: "Oh they stopped doing that. They weren't supposed to." The employee said the store manager put a stop to it.

The store manager, who declined on on-camera interview, claimed no knowledge of the offer. The manager said they would not allow something like that.

He added that any shopper who paid the money would get a refund, while any worker who engaged in the practice would be terminated.

Rice says she just hopes this never happens again.

"It was very disturbing. I mean definitely unethical," she said.

Anyone who paid the price to cut in line should call the store and ask for the store manager.
