Canadian cattle coming back as mad cow fears ease
10:31 AM PST on Wednesday, November 14, 2007
SEATTLE - Beginning Monday, Canadian cattle will be allowed back into the United States.
That would be the first since imports were blocked four years ago after a cow from Canada was found in Mabton with mad cow disease.
Some consumer groups and Washington ranchers say not enough has been done since then to test or track meat to prevent the brain-wasting disease from spreading.
Experts with the U.S. Department of Agriculture say the risk of the disease is extremely low.
The Food Policy Institute of the Consumer Federation of America and 10 other plaintiffs are suing the department in federal court in South Dakota, seeking a court order against cattle imports.
