KB Toys gift cards expire Jan. 11

04:30 PM PST on Monday, January 5, 2009

KING5.com Staff and Associated Press

SALEM, Ore. - Use it or lose it by Sunday if you have a gift card for a KB Toys store.

Oregon Attorney General John Kroger alerted consumers statewide Monday that any KB Toys store credit and unredeemed gift cards will expire on Sunday.

KB Toys Inc. is liquidating its stores and estimates there are 12 million unused gift cards that have not been redeemed.

KB Toys has notified state officials its stores in Oregon or Washington will not honor gift cards and merchandise credits after the close of business Sunday.

Oregon stores are in the Lincoln City, Seaside, Woodburn and Troutdale outlet malls. The Washington stores include outlet stores in Centralia and North Bend, and a retail store in the Vancouver Mall.

Washington Attorney General Rob McKenna's office said under Washington's gift card law, gift cards and gift certificates sold by retailers generally never expire or carry expensive maintenance fees. If a company files for bankruptcy, however, it's up to the court to decide which financial obligations are honored.
