Signs that your tree may be at risk of falling during a storm

Jon Poteet, an arborist with Northwest Tree Specialists, shared some warning signs for trees at risk of falling.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The National Weather Service issued a High Wind Warning for all areas west of the Cascades from Longview to Eugene from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday.

Gusts up to 55 mph are possible in the Portland metro area, forecasters say.

Ahead of Saturday's wind storm, Jon Poteet, an arborist with Northwest Tree Specialists, shared some warning signs for trees at risk of falling.

He said mushrooms in the ground near your tree means your tree is sick and you should get it checked.

Another type of mushroom, called Artist's Conk, that grows on trunk of the tree is a sign that there's rot inside.

And then there is the space near the trunk of the tree.

“We get the call a lot of times when people say it's going fall, it's going to fall. First thing we do is we look right around the base of the tree, and you can see if it’s starting to push that soil back a little bit as the tree moves,” Poteet explained. He said if that's the case with a tree near your home, that's a bad sign.

The anticipated wind storm comes a year, to the date, of a storm last spring that knocked down trees throughout the metro area. In addition to damaged homes, a falling tree killed a man in Hillsboro.
