Millions of people are expected to hit the roads to their Christmas holiday destinations this year.
To help you plan, WSDOT has released its Christmas holiday travel charts so you will know when the roads will be particularly clogged on I-90 over Snoqualmie Pass, Interstate 5 between Tacoma and Olympia, and I-5 between Bellingham and the Canadian border, and US 2 over Stevens Pass.
Motorists can expect longer than typical wait times at ferry docks and Canadian border crossings. And the clearing of the December 18 train derailment on I-5 will likely also affect projected travel times.
If you're headed south from Tacoma to Olympia, drivers can expect the worst traffic congestion with stop and go traffic on Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 2 p.m.
Heading northbound on I-5 from Olympia to Tacoma, drivers can expect the heaviest traffic Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Monday, noon to 1 p.m.
Drivers headed north to the Canadian border can expect a better commute, with moderate to heavy traffic expected Friday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 7 p.m., and Monday, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Coming back from the Canadian border southbound on I-5, moderate to heavy traffic is expected Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. N0 backups or delays are expected Monday.
Drivers heading east on I-90 through Snoqualmie Pass from North Bend to Cle Elum can expect moderate to heavy traffic Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, 11 a .m. to 1 p.m.
Heading back west, motorists can expect similar traffic Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, noon to 4 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 2 p.m.
On U.S. 2 between Stevens Pass to Leavenworth, eastbound drivers can expect heavy to moderate traffic on Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., and Sunday, noon to 3 p.m. and Monday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Westbound drivers can expect moderate to heavy roads Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and Monday, noon to 3 p.m.
