High water breaches dike, threatens homes in Skagit County

Residents applied for federal grants to buy out their homes along the Skagit River, but there's no decision yet.
Lyman, Washington along the Skagit River. February 6, 2018

Water poured from a breach in a dike along the Samish River in western Skagit County.

The area is rural and no homes or people are in any dangers. Residents say the breach happened near the Thomas Road bridge over the Samish. The area is prone to flooding.

The dike will be repaired once the water levels recede.

Austin Breckenridge saw the breach and took drone video as water poured through.

Erosion creeps closer to homes in Lyman, WA

Homeowners on the Skagit River are even more on edge after high water lead to more erosion over the last few days.

A new photo shows the water washed away another five or six feet near homes along the bank. One house appears about to fall in and several others are too dangerous to live in.

Homeowners hope the federal government will step in and buy their homes so they can start over. With the help of local officials, they have applied for grants from the federal Hazard Mitigation Assistance program. Homeowners hit by storms, flooding, landslides or mudslides can apply for grants to pay for their homes and property. The area was declared a disaster area last April making residents eligible to apply.

Skagit County Emergency Management tells us the applications are in but there's no timeline for a decision on the Lyman homeowners' application.

Last November, high water ate away at the banks and toppled the garage of one house into the river.

Erosion Closes Prevedal Road

Meantime, Lyman residents are dealing with another problem. This one is near SR 20 on Prevedal Road. A small patch of the hillside gave way undermining the edge of Prevedal Road. It's now closed.
