TUKWILA -- Sounders designated player Clint Dempsey will not play for the remainder of the 2016 MLS season.

General Manager and President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey made the announcement during media availability Tuesday.

The forward underwent medical tests for an irregular heartbeat at the end of August. He returned to training mid-September.

Lagerwey said the team’s top priority was to make sure Dempsey was healthy enough to play. They hope he will be back on the pitch in 2017.
