The Canadians performed just minutes after the French couple Gabriella Padadakis and Guillaume Cizeron, who stunned the crowd with the highest free dance score ever.

A day after an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction for Papadakis was broadcast live to the world, the couple came back with a flawless routine that left her in tears. They were second after the short program despite the top of Papadakis' outfit coming apart, and seemed poised to overcame favorites Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of Canada.

Then the Canadians simply put on a historic performance.

They scored 206.07 to the French couple's 205.28. Moir and Virtue won gold in Vancouver, two silvers in Sochi and now two golds here with the team competition last week.

The Shibutanis, who last week won a bronze in the team competition, scored 192.59 to overtake countrymen Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donahue, the national champs who were third after the short program.

The U.S. team of Madison Chock and Evan Bates suffered a rare spill and finished ninth. They were seventh after the short program.

On Wednesday, the final figure skating event begins, the women's individual. The USA has three entries: Mirai Nagasu, Bradie Tennell and Karen Chen.
