Sixteen-year-old Max Tanzer was one of many disappointed Seattle Mariners fans Wednesday after hearing Edgar Martinez didn’t make the Hall of Fame this year.

Tanzer just had an outlet for venting. He’s known as "Mariner-Max" on-air for 88.9 FM: The Bridge, the high school radio station run out of Mercer Island High School.

“I never got to watch Edgar play, but I did actually have hitting lessons from him in sixth grade,” said Tanzer.

Tanzer said ‘Gar taught him to visualize success, which he now translates to radio. It seems to be working since, last year, he won a national Golden Microphone award, given to the top high school and college media students in the country.

“Obviously I want to see this as a Mariners fan,” he told listeners. “Also, my dad and I bought tickets to go to Cooperstown because we were so confident in it this year. Looks like we’re going to have to wait until next year.”

His opinions are well-researched. Tanzer routinely uses sabermetric stats like WAR (wins above replacement) and slash lines (batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage) to emphasize his opinions. He jots those statistics in his history class college-ruled three-ring notebook.

"Downtown" Joe Bryant runs the 30-watt station. Bryant is a veteran of Seattle radio.
