SEATTLE - Firefighters responded to a trash fire Friday morning that sent plenty of smoke into the air impacting visibility on the roads for a time.

The fire began in the Seattle Public Utilities Transfer Station just before 1:00 a.m. in the 1300 block of South Kenyon Street.

Crews will spend much of the morning digging their way to the base of fire, pushing through large amounts of debris.

At one point the fire was sending a lot of smoke over State Route 99 near the 509 interchange.

Seattle Fire says operations at the transfer station will be closed today.
