Why does Ocean Shores sell its sand?

The KING 5 Investigators took on a case of a different kind this week: the Great Sand Caper in Ocean Shores.

The KING 5 Investigators took on a case of a different kind this week: the Great Sand Caper.

It started with a call from a source named Paul.

Paul saw something fishy on the Washington coast and turned to KING 5's Chris Ingalls: Why were trucks hauling off sand from Ocean Shores?

Ingalls hit the phones and got his answer from the City of Ocean Shores. It turns out drifting sand blows away and creates unwanted dunes, which can block access roads to the beach. The city sells that sand to private contractors who use it for building and landscaping.

The sand income helps recoup the costs of beach maintenance, especially in other areas where erosion is an issue.
