SWAT standoff leaves 4 people homeless in Federal Way

Homeowners say the damage could take more than six months to repair.
Kevin Hocking said his house needs severe repairs after a Federal Way standoff.

New photos show the damage and destruction left inside a Federal Way home after an hours-long SWAT standoff with an invader Wednesday night.

The homeowners believe they could be out of their house for the next six months.

The standoff started with a hit-and-run crash and the suspect ran into a stranger's home. The 36-year-old Auburn man barricaded himself in the house for more than nine hours. The standoff ended when SWAT officers entered the home and the suspect fired on them. Officers returned gunfire, but it's unclear whether the suspect died of the return fire or a self-inflicted wound.

Kevin Hocking said his house needs repairs from what happened during the standoff. Officers reportedly used tear gas and had to cut holes in the floor to find the suspect.

“It’s going to be a total rebuild down to the studs and then put all back together,” he said.

South King Fire & Rescue responded to the house in the afternoon to extinguish a small fire but it is not clear how the fire started.

“It was like watching a movie because you never expect something like this to happen to you."

Hocking said the insurance will likely cover much of the costs but it is still being determined.

Four people were living in the house, two twin sisters and their husbands. Glen and Judie Whitton live in the house with Hocking, they set up a Go Fund Me site to help cover immediate needs.

“In the end its just a house," Hocking said.
