One man was killed and another person was hurt after a semi hit their car on Interstate 5 near Centralia Sunday night. The semi driver was arrested after troopers suspected drugs or alcohol were involved.
Trooper Brooke Bova says their car overheated along northbound I-5. The pair had pulled the vehicle to the shoulder when the truck slammed into the car.
Edward Chambers, 80, of Beaverton, Ore. died at the scene. His 19-year-old passenger from Hillsboro, Ore. was treated for a minor injury at St. Peter Hospital and released.
The semi-truck driver, a 36-year-old Yelm man, was arrested for investigation of vehicular homicide.
Lanes were blocked on I-5 near milepost 86 while troopers cleaned up the crash and investigated. As they worked to clear the scene, an inattentive driver struck a WSDOT Incident Response truck, Bova said. There were no injuries in that crash.
