REI is sending another Thanksgiving message this year to retailers and consumers: Head outdoors.

For the second straight year, the Seattle-based outdoor retailer will #OptOutside and close all its 149 locations on Black Friday. Taking things further, REI also won't be processing online sales while still paying all 12,287 employees to take the day off and enjoy the outdoors with family and friends.

Several organizations, including state and nation parks and Google, have already committed to the campaign. Many more are expected to join by Black Friday.

REI also launched an outdoor activity finder at to help people reconnect with family and friends this holiday season. Visitors can upload photos, share through social media, discover thousands of trails and parks or get connected with non-profits that steward the outdoors.
