A Pierce County deputy is returning home from the hospital on Monday after suffering a serious injury. Deputy Sydney Davis broke her neck when a suspected drunk drove into her patrol car on April 5.

Investigators say the 25-year-old driver, Daniel Munguia, pulled out from a tavern parking lot and struck Davis’ vehicle, causing her to roll over an embankment, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash happened around 9:45 p.m. on Pacific Avenue near 125th Street.

A sergeant at the scene “…noted the driver smelled of intoxicants, his speech was slurred at times, and his eyes appeared watery and bloodshot.”

Munguia told officers at the scene of the crash that he had consumed beer and smoked marijuana earlier that night. He agreed to a series of field sobriety tests and blew a 0.107.

Munguia has been charged with vehicular assault.
