The Oak View Group has made some minor tweaks to its KeyArena renovation plan and discussed them for the first time on Thursday.
OVG made a nearly three-hour presentation before the Seattle Design Commission Thursday, showing off the newest sketches and plans. It's a requirement for any project on the "design of capital improvements and other projects and policies that shape Seattle's public realm."
The company's presentation included alterations intended to improve foot and traffic flow to the $600 million building. They include changes to the south side of the building in particular.
In a statement, OVG said: "The architectural renderings shared in today’s meeting are intended to update the Commission and to better illustrate the structure’s improved flow and elevation in 4 key areas. The updates reflected are at “concept level” and as such, will be further refined in response to community input and design evolution during the public review process.
The four improved areas highlighted in the meeting include:
1. A reduction of the atrium volume at the north and south ends to better emphasize the existing landmarked roofline.
2. A new entrance added at the center of the south side of the atrium to optimize customer flow.
3. The southwest and southeast corners of the structure have been improved to allow better pedestrian access flow.
4. The south boundary along Thomas Street has been improved to emphasize a pedestrian experience."
OVG needs final design guidance and landmark approval to get approval to move forward with demolition. Transportation and environmental reviews are also underway. OVG's Tim Leiweke has said he believes demolition at the site can begin in November, and the building will be ready to open in time for an NHL franchise in 2020.
