Norovirus outbreak hits 4 restaurants in King County

Dozens of diners have shown symptoms of norovirus at restaurants across King County.

The King County Health Department says dozens of diners contracted norovirus after eating at four restaurants spread across the county.

According to the department, "Norovirus illness often has a sudden onset of nausea and vomiting and/or watery diarrhea with cramps. A low-grade fever, chills, and body aches sometimes occur."

Several diners developed symptoms of norovirus after eating at Anthony's Homeport in Des Moines, Italianissimo Ristorante in Woodinville, and Lockspot Cafe and Okinawa Teriyaki in Seattle.

Anthony's Homeport

  • 15 diners sick after consuming food and drink on May 13.
  • 5 employees felt sick dating back to May 14.
  • The restaurant was closed and cleaned on May 16
  • Prior food safety inspections and current rating: Excellent

Italianissimo Ristorante

  • 11 diners sick from consuming food and drink between May 11-15.
  • 5 employees identified for norovirus dating back to May 13.
  • The restaurant was closed and cleaned on May 16.
  • Prior food safety inspections and current rating: Excellent

Lockspot Cafe

  • 3 diners reported symptoms from eating at the restaurant between May 12-13.
  • Health officials closed the restaurant for cleaning on May 17.
  • Prior food safety inspections and current rating: Excellent

Okinawa Teriyaki

  • 17 diners showed symptoms of norovirus after eating between May 8-9.
  • Investigators visited May 11 and found that proper disinfectants were not being used to clean surfaces.
  • The restaurant will reopen when proper cleaning procedures have been followed.
  • Prior food safety inspections and current rating: Okay

The health department encourages people to wait at least 48 hours after the last episode of vomiting and/or diarrhea before preparing any food for others. And wash hands thoroughly before and after preparing food.

Anthony's Homeport released the following statement Friday night:

“We were deeply concerned when our guests contacted us to let us know they were ill,” says Dana Lancaster, General Manager of Anthony’s HomePort and Oyster Bar & Grill. “We have been in continual contact with them throughout this process to see how they’re doing and to keep them updated on the investigation. We contacted the King County Health Department as soon as we received the call from these guests and have been working closely with the Health Department regarding this incident. We received a thorough inspection from them and we then immediately began working on sanitizing the restaurant. We work very hard to ensure the safety of our guests and are proud of the Excellent Rating we hold from the King County Health Department.”
