A father and son were found dead after an apartment fire in Auburn late Wednesday night.
The fire began in a 4-plex apartment building just before midnight. A neighbor call 911, reporting a fire in the 2300 block of O Street NE.
The man and a 4-year-old boy were found in an apartment on the second floor. A woman and 9-year-old girl were able to escape the building, according to Kimberly Terhune with Valley Regional Fire Authority.
Two police officers arrived at the scene first and attempted to assist people inside. However, the intense heat and smoke forced them back.
Neighbors heard sounds from the fire and did what they could to help.
"I ran downstairs and grabbed my hose, went to the neighbor's garage, it was closed. It was still locked. My neighbor was trying to open it so I went down and helped him pry it open," said Matthew Dittmar, witness to the fire.
All residents in the three other apartment units have been displaced. Red Cross has responded to assist those families.
