Severe weather Saturday will likely bring urban flooding and standing water on roadways. Driving through standing water can suddenly become deadly.
National Weather Service officials ask drivers to never drive in flooded areas.
According to NWS, “a mere 6 inches of fast-moving flood water can knock over an adult. It takes just 12 inches of rushing water to carry away a small car, while 2 feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles.”
NWS and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have released a public service announcement called “Turn Around Don’t Drown.”
The video below shows the dangers of driving through standing water.
“More than half of the deaths from flooding each year occur in vehicles,” according to NWS.
