When it drops below freezing, seek shelter. But what if you don’t have anywhere to go?

This week’s cold snap triggered a number of warming centers to open for the homeless in Olympia.

Olympia’s Union Gospel Mission stays open all winter long.

Overnight Tuesday, more than 60 men and women slept on cots in the mission’s lunchroom.

A mother and her two children spent the night in a different room, according to Mindy Owens, the mission’s Director of Community Outreach.

Owens said the mother had been living with her two children in their van this winter, but decided it was too cold to spend another night on the streets.

Owens said they’re always looking for donations of cash, warm clothing, or volunteer hours.
