BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- A stabbing suspect is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Bellingham Sunday, police confirmed.

It started after the suspect allegedly stabbed someone in downtown Bellingham, then fled the scene. Witnesses followed the suspect while others called 911 and helped the victim.

Police caught up with the suspect near the 1400 block of Railroad Avenue. They say the officer ordered him to put the knife down, but he continued to advance. That's when the officer opened fire. The suspect died at the scene.

The victim, who was stabbed in the neck, was taken to the hospital.

Bellingham police say a multi-agency team is investigating the incident.
