A 6-year-old Bellingham boy has died from a mysterious illness.

Daniel Ramirez died Sunday after being hospitalized for an unknown virus.

Eight children were recently treated at Seattle Children’s hospital for a rare neurological disease. The illness was consistent with symptoms of Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM), a condition that affects the nervous system.

It is unclear if Ramirez was one of the eight children admitted to Seattle Children's hospital in the last few weeks with a rare illness. According to Seattle Children’s, five of the children have been released.

AFM affects a person’s nervous system, specifically the spinal cord. Symptoms include limb weakness, loss of muscle ton, and decreased or absent reflexes. The cause of AFM varies, but many viruses and germs are linked to the disease.

Ramirez’s family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with expenses.
