Rudi Wetzel, an 81-year-old survivor of December’s Amtrak train derailment, is improving.

KING 5 reporter Alex Rozier has been in contact with his family since the crash.

“He starting to improve. His family sent me a picture of him sitting on the couch and smiling,” said Rozier on KING 5’s The Sound Podcast. The interview was recorded in early January.

Rudi's days include rehabilitation. His family said Rudi hopes to ride the train again soon, according to Rozier.

In the segment, which starts roughly 12:30 into the podcast, Rozier and photojournalist Jim Scott recount their day of coverage. They were on the Amtrak train that derailed, but exited the stop before the crash.
