The Hood Canal Bridge has reopened in both directions to vehicles and marine traffic after a mechanical malfunction.

The bridge was out of service for about seven hours Sunday.

The bridge was raised Sunday morning to let marine traffic through, but when the bridge was lowered, something malfunctioned. The bridge closed as of 8:17 a.m.

Officials do not know what caused the malfunction.

Washington State Department of Transportation said engineers arrived at the bridge in the afternoon and successfully lowered the bridge and manually closed the gap by 2:30 p.m. Workers also had to reinstall a piece of equipment that they took off the bridge during the lowering process.
