SEATTLE -- The maker of Nature Made products, including gummy vitamins, is recalling specific producers because of possible Salmonella or staph contamination.

"We are initiating this recall out of an abundance of caution to protect public health," wrote Pharmavite LLC in its announcement. "The recalled products were distributed nationwide to various major retailers."

The recall was launched after it was discovered that testing was not completed correctly on the batch lots listed below.

Symptoms of Salmonella include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.

Staph toxins can lead to food poisoning. The most common symptoms are nausea, vomiting, retching, abdominal cramping, and prostration. In more severe cases, a person can suffer from a headache, muscle cramping, and changes in blood pressure and pulse rate.
