Flotation therapy can alter holiday stress

Flotation therapy can provide a host of benefits, claim patients.

Wouldn't it be nice if our everyday stress would just float away? Well, there are places that offer "flotation therapy" with the goal of doing just that.

Floatation therapy often involves partial sensory deprivation and roughly 1,000 pounds of salt.

The medical benefits are still largely anecdotal, but fans swear it helps them relax.

"I love floating. It's the most peace I am able to find, and it's also the time I don't feel any pain," said Lisa Stevenson, a float therapy customer.

Stevenson has been floating since the spring and claims it has helped her recover from her knee and shoulder surgery.

Kimmie Boone claims floating helped her recover from addiction.

"Within six weeks I noticed such a big difference. I was calmer, I was more serene," she said.

Floating works by placing a customer in 11 inches of water. The water is set to room temperature. Sessions typically last for one hour.

Small studies on floating suggest it can help with tension, depression, and pain.

Prices vary between float centers, with many of them selling multiple float packages to get the best deal. Here in the Puget Sound region, you can expect to pay around $40 for an hour-long session.
