Whitman College announced Thursday the Blues is the school’s new mascot.

The Blue Mountain range in Southeast Washington and Northeast Oregon is the closest mountains to Whitman. The school wrote in a release that the mountains’ peaks “represent both a challenge and a sense of accomplishment,” which the school identifies with.

Whitman College retired its previous mascot, the missionary, in fall 2015 over concerns about diversity and inclusion.

Over the summer, the school solicited 400 unique mascot suggestions from 1,200 people. The college narrowed it down to the appaloosas, the blues, the blue ravens, and the sockeyes. The Whitman community voted on the new mascot in October.

The school will unveil a new visual representation of the mascot in fall 2017.
