A Pierce County sheriff's deputy shot and killed an armed carjacking suspect in Spanaway early Friday morning after the suspect crashed the stolen vehicle.
It started around 4:50 a.m. when multiple people called 911 to report an armed man who was described as "ranting and raving" who carjacked someone.
The sheriff's office says the suspect took off and made it a block or two before crashing into a utility box outside a home in the 18900 block of 23rd Avenue Court E. The vehicle caught fire.
The man got out of the vehicle armed, and shots were fired, Pierce County Sheriff's Department spokesman Ed Troyer said. The suspect died at the scene.
"This is obviously somebody who was a little bit not in their right sense, who was ranting and raving at 5 o'clock in the morning, blocking the streets, holding a handgun. So this could have turned out a lot worse," Troyer said.
Some neighbors were evacuated as a precaution due to the fire.
Troyer said the carjacking victim is OK.
The suspect was initially identified as a white man about 35 years old. Troyer said he had no identification on him.
