The person of interest in the death of a woman whose body was found Saturday in a hillside bunker on Camano Island may have changed vehicles.
The death of Katherine Cunningham, 26, is being investigated as a homicide. Jacob Gonzales, 34, has been named as a person of interest.
The Island County Coroner’s Office determined Cunningham’s cause of death as “Homicidal Violence with Decapitation.”
Authorities say Gonzales is a Hispanic man, approximately 5’9” tall, weighs 150 pounds, and has black hair and hazel eyes. The Sheriff’s Office is asking the public not to approach him and believe Gonzales is armed and dangerous.
The sheriff's office said Thursday Gonzales no longer owns the green 1990 Mitsubishi Montero he was initially believed to be driving. Based on tips, it's believed he's driving a silver compact car, but no other details were available as of Thursday night.
Gonzales may be heading to central or southern California.
Detectives who responded to a 911 call found Cunningham’s body Saturday afternoon on an undeveloped parcel of land on the south part of the island on Tamarack Lane. They said she appeared to have been dead for several days.
Investigators served several search warrants on the property and discovered a bunker dug into the hillside containing supplies, guns and ammo. They said they believe the woman was specifically targeted.
