BREMERTON — A 29-year-old Bremerton man was hospitalized after he tried to outrun police and crashed his car on Highway 3 early Sunday.
The driver of a 1999 Acura Integra was speeding northbound on Highway 3 at about 3 a.m. Sunday, according to Washington State Patrol. Port Orchard police pursued him.
Near the Rodeo Drive-In, the driver swerved to avoid spike strips that had been put down by police. His car ran off the road and hit a mailbox and utility pole. The crash closed the southbound lane of Highway 3 for eight hours, and Puget Sound Energy kept it closed an additional two for repairs.
Police later determined the car had been stolen, according to Sergeant Jason Glantz with Port Orchard police.
The driver was taken to Harrison Medical Center and later transferred to Tacoma General Hospital. It's unclear if drugs or alcohol were involved.
Washington State Patrol is investigating.
