Pierce County deputies opened fire in two separate incidents Thursday night, killing one person and sending another to the hospital.

One incident started with a police pursuit in Pierce County and extended into Kitsap County, according to the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office. Two people were in the vehicle being chased.

After deploying spike stripes and flattening the vehicle's tires, deputies chased the 1996 Acura Integra into Port Orchard at Olney Road Southeast between Southeast Horstman Road and Beach Drive.

Several Pierce County Deputies surrounded the car, and one Pierce County Deputy fired several shots into the vehicle, according to the sheriff's office, hitting the 35 year old male driver. He was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center.

A 23 year old female passenger in the car was taken to the hospital for unrelated medical issues.

Bremerton Police Chief Chief Steve Strachan has said that the man involved in the shooting has many listed residences, but is possibly from the Gig Harbor area.

No deputies were hurt.

Deputies did not immediately say what led to the chase.

In a separate incident Thursday night, the Pierce County Sheriff's Department says deputies responding to reports of a suicidal man with a knife shot and killed him.

The incident happened in the 2000 block of 78th Court.

No deputies were injured.

It's typical procedure to put officers who fired their weapons on paid leave while the shooting is investigated.
