The new comedy Game Night revolves around a group of friends who all bring something different to the party.
There's the high school sweethearts turned married couple, played by Kylie Bunbury and Lamorne Morris. He’s the only cast member with professional gaming experience – he hosted a show called BrainRush on the Cartoon Network.
“The directors first, before they wrote the script, they came to me and said, 'Would you be part of this movement called Game Night?'" he said jokingly.
In reality, the writers did create a character just for Jason Bateman and his singular brand of humor. He plays a hyper-competitive trivia buff married to gaming equal Rachel McAdams.
"All the funny stuff was (the writers) and we just tried to not mess it up,” Bateman said.
Billy Magnussen and Sharon Horgan play opposites-attracting on a first date. But her advances were rejected by another scene-stealing cast member: a fluffy while dog.
"He just didn't engage, you know?” she said.
“Always in his trailer, hung over,” Magnussen added.
“I wanted to be friends with him but he was just like, mm mm mm,” Horgan said.
Rounding out the cast are Jesse Plemmons and Kyle Chandler, who said figuring out the best way to deliver a joke was a bit like playing a game in his own head.
"I enjoyed doing this,” he said. “It's fun to play in that little world."
Game Night is rated R and is now playing.
