Orca calf born in Puget Sound

05:14 PM PST on Thursday, November 8, 2007

Associated Press

BREMERTON, Wash. - A baby orca was apparently born this week while J pod has been in Puget Sound.

The baby was spotted yesterday by federal biologists watching the killer whales between Bainbridge and Vashon islands.

The baby has been designated J-43. The mother is apparently J-14, a 33-year-old also known as Samish who has four other offspring.

The birth brings the population of J pod to 26 and the total population of Puget Sound orcas to 88.
