This seal was spotted on a float near Alki Beach Wednesday.

SEATTLE - In West Seattle, efforts are underway to keep baby seals safe during a very busy summer on the beach.

A volunteer group called "Seal Sitters" has been watching over a wounded seal named Sunny, who made its way onto a float at the west end of Alki Beach Wednesday.

Sunny had a deep gash under the neck and above the eye, and spent much of the day at Alki before swimming away.

Seal Sitters had been in contact with the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration. NOAA said that since the seal seemed to be healing on its own, they wouldn't interfere.

"The fact that he could swim, that he could haul up on the platform are excellent signs," wrote Brenda Peterson, of Seal Sitters, in an e-mail to KING5.com

The group says seals that sleep on the beach are at risk of being hurt by pollution and beach-goers. They say waterfront property owners can help by anchoring small floats or platforms off their property so seals can have a place to lounge without risking the beach.
