Tacoma court deciding whether pet pig is a hog

09:04 AM PDT on Monday, May 12, 2008

Associated Press

TACOMA, Wash. - A Tacoma Municipal Court hearing Tuesday will take up the question of whether a pig is a hog.

The answer will determine whether a Tacoma man, Judson Morris, can keep his pet potbelly pig, who is named Pig-pig, in the city.

A Tacoma health inspector says it's a hog, banned within the city limits by an ordinance based on a 1912 statute.

A vet confirmed that Pig-pig is a female sow, while Black's Veterinary dictionary defines hog as a castrated male pig.

The city attorney says "hog" and "pig" are interchangeable terms and a reasonable person should agree.
