Man killed by bees was in Mesa to meet dad for first time
MESA, Ariz. - A Louisiana man stung to death by bees Thursday morning was in Arizona to meet his father for the first time, his family told 12 News.
Alex Bestler, 23, of Kinder, Louisiana, had gone hiking with his stepsister at Usery Mountain Park.
He was stung more than a thousand times on the Vista Trail, at the south end of the park. Bestler's stepsister managed to make it down the trail and hide in a bathroom but he could not make it down. Sheriff's deputies trying to rescue him had to try multiple times to reach him through the swarm.
Park officials closed down the Vista Trail, which climbs over a mountain, and the Merkel Trail, which circles around that same mountain.
Officials called in bee experts to "subdue" the bees, but say they're not sure all the bees are gone. The hive is apparently located underground in a crack between rocks, park officials said.
For safety, park officials said they'll keep both trails closed throughout the weekend and have the company come back to check the hive.
